Cold recognition of 'that's a major 6th' is hard to build directly — but almost everyone can recognize a familiar song within one or two notes. The reference-song method exploits that: pair each interval with a song opening that uses it, drill the association until it's automatic, then let the song fade into the background as pure interval recognition takes over.
A few widely used anchors: minor 2nd ascending resembles the 'Jaws' theme; major 2nd ascending resembles 'Happy Birthday'; minor 3rd descending resembles the opening of 'Hey Jude'; perfect 4th ascending resembles 'Here Comes the Bride'; perfect 5th ascending resembles the 'Star Wars' main theme; and an ascending octave resembles 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow.'
⚠️ Common mistake
Relying on the song crutch forever instead of gradually testing yourself without it. The goal is for the song to train your ear, then get out of the way — periodically try to name an interval before the song comes to mind.
